Glass Sculpture by Nan Phillips

figurative sculpture

The human body intrigues me.  Its latent power in bone and muscle; its ability to speak volumes without the use of a single word. Whether we are aware of it or not, every nuance of the body's position conveys an inner truth. By sculpting in the classical style of realistic figurative sculpture, I am able to give wing to my own inner voice.

"Tranquility"

Tranquility was sculpted in clay from a live model and cast in bronze using the lost wax method.  Patina is applied to each sculpture, and then burnished by hand to achieve the desired coloration and highlights.  The finished piece is sealed in multiple layers of wax and polished for its protection and luster.

"Disappearing Identity"

Nan Phillips realistic figurative sculpture

Disappearing Identity portrays the struggle between woman's self-identity and her obligations - the disappearance of self into the self-less duties and obligations of life.

Her back and feet are sculpted in fine detail, while her face, left arm and hand are held firmly by the permanence of rock, while her right arm and hand struggle to push against the inevitable.

She remains faceless.

Disappearing Identity was sculpted in clay from a live model in a different pose. I adapted the pose to convey my vision.
