“Eye of the Storm” by Nan Phillips is a captivating multi-dimensional fused and tack-fused glass sculpture measuring 11.5” high x 16.25” wide x 18” deep, weighing 15 lbs. The piece was conceived while listening to reports of a hurricane heading for the Texas coast. While I no longer live in a hurricane-prone area, I experienced many hurricanes during my 20 years in Houston. The force and power of these storms still stir my soul. In this sculpture I tried to capture the swirling movement, storm surge, and force of winds and water. The front layer of this sculpture is composed of some pieces of colored sheet glass, but mainly many, many layers of multiple colors of frit to achieve the water’s depth and movement. The piece was tack-fused to keep the dimensionality and texture of the glass frit, and then slumped into a gentle S curve. A watery-textured sheet of clear glass, slumped into the same S curve, is placed at a different angle to attach to the frit sculpture along one line for support, but the intervening space between the two layers of glass affords the sculpture additional depth. The sculpture is affixed to a fully fused glass base which was created using 3 layers of glass: one layer of clear silver iridized fracture glass laid face-to-face over a layer of transparent blue rainbow iridized fracture glass. A clear glass top layer seals the irid-to-irid glasses and gives the base additional depth. The result is a shimmering glass base of deep blue.
